I fucking love The Smiths. If the title of the blog wasn't obvious enough you now know. This is despite Morrissey denying me a battered sausage in my drunken state by banning any of the catering stalls selling meat when i saw him in Marley Park in August 2006, i've just about forgiven him.

After the game on Sunday we had 7 hours to spend in Manchester. Our bus wasn't heading back to Hollyhead until as late that night as possible. If you've ever had to spend an hour in Hollyhead you will know why. Departing 11pm it was then.

After drowning our sorrows for what felt like too long in, the Bray Supporters Clubs local haunt, 'The Tollgate' just bedside Old Trafford we decided to head down 'The Curry Mile' in Rusholme. Passing the neon jungle of curry houses on our bus ride back from the city centre on Saturday night left an impression on Anto's stomach and his suggestion was greeted with much approval.

We took a cab via the infamous Moss Side of Manchester and jumped out for a lap of the mile, hoping to find a restaurant that'd meet our needs sooner rather later. After One lap and discovering that Kev's recommended eatery was closed we settled on a place that was offering 15% discount and free pompadons. Good times!

After the meal and still with 3 hours to spare i suggested, to what i thought would be in vain, that we go find the Salford Lads Club and get a photo outside the iconic building. Suprisingly enough Kev immediately agreed and Anto was whether he liked it or not, thankfully the former, bound to join us on our spontaneous pilgrimage.

We hailed a cab and asked him to take us to the club. He just about knew where Salford was so said he'd drop us off at the University. We thought that was fair enough, we'll hit a student bar, ask where the club is, how hard could it be??

Salford was like a ghost town when we got there, the only place between the towers of flats and motorway that seemed to have any life in it was 'The Woolpack' a pub so 'exclusive' we had to ring a preventative buzzer before we could even enter the place!

When we finally gained entrance we were greeted to what i had always imagined pub life in 'Little Britain'(not the show) to be like, an inescapable place where the Octogenarian's singing karaoke, would only be replaced by the other people in the pub, who in turn would only procreate so as to have someone else who could sing 'Nothing compares to you' in a couple of decades time. What only made it more depressing was that the twentysomething's there seemed to know this fate.

Notwithstanding that we did get a nice pint and get chatting to a friendly local who after consolidating our disgust about the match admitted he knew where the Salfords Lads Club was! He only lived around the corner from it! Excellent! "Can we walk it?" Not really, came the reply , "but i can sort ya out wiv a taxi" good enough for me!

After a few phone calls it became clear that the likelihood of me getting to arch a quiff in honour of 'the Mozfather' was becoming less and less likely tonight. He couldn't get a cab despite trying a few numbers. Just as well, as my gel was on the bus. We finished our beers and went back out into the cold, disheartened but still not defeated.

We wandered into the night and only then did it dawn on his just how dodgy Salford was. It was no Moss Side but it certainly wasn't far off. Thankfully the free roaming Pit Bull that crossed our path didn't seem too concerned with us and we dropped into the 'Salford Chippy' in the hope that they could either point us in the right direction or call us a cab. Turned out the guy working there while not Irish himself had lived in Dublin for a few years and was more than happy to help us out. After we had convinced him that 'Salford Lad's Club' wasn't a gay club though his directions had changed and with time against us, i knew it was over as we decided to get back to the Toll Gate in time to make it home. It was still a great random night though.

Well i got home at 7am this morning after a grueling trip back. we lost after probably the worst performance by the team in a long time. Uninspired despite the inspiring scenes in the build up to the game and a number of players looked like they didn't actually care! The only United players who i can say anything positive about were Anderson and Vidic. Here's a few photos a took over the weekend and i'll post up a few funny stories later:

Gonna be a lack of post's this weekend as i'm off to Manchester for the derby game. It's my first Manchester Derby which is special enough but taking into account the Munich tributes going on all this week over there and it will be a very special weekend indeed!

The lads are going to be playing in this kit to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster:
Hopefully it'll be a weekend to a remember for all the right reasons. Come on United!

Sunday: 4 Slices of toast, 1 Cup Chicken Noodle Soup, Square of Chocolate
Monday: Small Flapjack, 2 Fajitas, bowl of Crunchy Nut Cornflakes.
Tuesday: Salad Roll, 2 Chicken Tenders, 3.5 pancakes
Wednesday: BBQ Supernoodles, Small Bowl of Pasta
Thursday: Bowl of Crunchy Nut Cornflakes, BBQ Supernoodles, Bacon Sandwich, 7 Chips and 4 Chicken pieces from my Chinese Takeaway.

I would go through that in about 2.5 days if i was healthy. Its horrible!

Lost, Does Anyone Care Anymore?

Lost, I hate you because i used to love you but then you fucked it up!

I got into lost when my sister Cathy got the Season one box set for Christmas 2005, It was amazing! My average day would be: I would wake up around 2pm eat leftovers of whatever big dinner we had the night before, watch tv, have a big dinner, have a beer or two with some crimbo tv and then to bed at 1am to watch lost till about 6am. They were good times.

I'd say i went through the box set in about a week. I then graduated to junkie by scouring the internet for Season 2 on the internet the day after it was aired in the US. I was watching a quality of video closer to a dodgy dubbed kung fu flick on an original 1989 Game Boy, but dammit it'd have to do! I'm embarrassed looking back on it now.

One time it got so bad that my brother and i ended up after a post night out chipper talking his mate diggers through the ENTIRE first season so he could come back to our house and watch the terrible quality episodes for himself and be up to speed. We may have also have had to download the 40 minute episodes first... on a 56k modem.

When Season 2 reached its finale i'm proud to say that i watched it on an actual tv with perfect sound, but by then the anger had already started to set in and i was through with Lost. The formula of the show was by now was:

Minutes 1-5: One question of the TEN asked in the last 3 weeks answered vaguely.
Minutes 5-35: Nothing Happens!!!!
Minutes 35-40: Three Questions Asked.

It was ridiculously frustrating, i had always wondered how the show could have such amazing ideas but still keep the views guessing and watching each week. I now know. They dont reveal anything EVER!

My patience finally blew after the creepy revelation that some chick (Libby, IMDB reminds me) that Hurley had been dating was actually in the same mental institution as Hurley was when he had been incarcerated. I loved the story, how were they to follow it up? Answer: By Killing Libby and never telling us. JJ Abrams you are a prick!

I'll never love another TV show in the same way again. I've boycotted Prison Break after Season One and been afraid to watch Heroes too as i know they too will be dragged out to a ridiculous length of time. When will American TV learn that a well respected show that bows out on top rather that a cash cow milked out every last penny to the point it is unrecognisable to what it was loved for is what TV viewers want?

Whilst my story is old news, My cousin Niamh, who is staying up with my family for the week, watched the first episode of series four on Monday and said she is beginning to feel the same way about the show. How long can this go on for? I've heard there are another 2 series at least in the pipeline, is the plan to give an answer so late after the original alluding to of one, that people will have forgotten what they were waiting to have answered in the first place?

Why the fuck was there a polar bear on a tropical island!!!???

Pancake Tuesday

Yesterday was quite possibly my favourite day of the year;

I have to praise my lovely mum who had 2 litres of pancake batter and had a vast array of toppings available also. Sods law and all that, i was still feeling the effects of the weekend so was struck down sick for the day so could only muster about three and a half pancakes before collapsing in pain! Grrr

Well thats not the point, downloading music online can be very comparable to going to Amsterdam and shopping down the red light. In theory its an apparent guilt free yet immoral way of getting what you want but it's very risky and the law of averages means your gonna catch 'the bad aids' sooner rather than later.

Therefore in the words of Grandmaster Flash: "So Don't Do It!" (or get caught! .... Downloading that is!!)

Tv Review: Superbowl XLII

Yesterday i was incapacitated for the day after eating a dodgy takeaway so found myself infront of the tv for a new personal best of 13 hours beginning at 14.30 and ending at 03.30 with the climax of Superbowl XLII (Thats 42, to those out there who only know up to 20 from either Rocky Movies or Wrestlemania's).

Not a big fan of the NFL due to how long they take to play 60 minutes of football (lasts nights game was over 3 hours long!) and not having any vested interest in any team i will normally only stay up for the Superbowl. The event usually is so over hyped and ultimately underwhelming that i'm asleep before the half time show.

This year i'm pleasantly suprised to say that the event actually lived up to its hype and was a great game even for a 'Johnny Come Lately' like myself!

To sum up the build up of this game:

The New England Patriots on an 18 game unbeaten run faced The in form New York Giants. If the Patriots won, they would win their 4th Superbowl in recent times and would be only the second team after The 1972 Miami Dolphins to go a whole campaign unbeaten. If The Giants won, it would be a victory for the underdog and redemption for their quarterback Eli Manning, who from what i gather is seen as a bit of an unreliable choking donkey at times. Manning would also if victorious finally grow out of the shadow of his older brother, Peyton Manning, who won the Superbowl with The Indianapolis Colts only last year.

To sum up the Game:

Alleged Donkey comes good to play an amazing game of football, thanks to the help of an stellar defensive line which took out Tom Brady (Patriots quarterback) 5 times which is a record this season apparently. This game even included the stereotypical "Forty Seconds to go, the Giants NEED a touch down!!" that even had me cheering at the overcoming of such enormous odds.

Maybe i won't be so quick to write off the sport next season?

We Are Scientists to play Ambassador:

If ever there was a recommendation for a good gig at a reasonable price it is this.

We Are Scientists play the Ambassador April 7th with tickets at €25 (thats reasonable at Dublin's standard!)

We Are Scientists first got my attention in Spring 2006 with the release of the great and amazingly catchy 'The Great Escape' taken from the album 'With Love and Squalor' which is equally great.

They played an impressive set at Oxegen that summer and i did have tickets to see them in October 2006 at the Ambassador but skipped them for the chance to see James Brown in the Olympia. This in hindsight, due to his death less than 2 months after the said AMAZING gig, was a great decision but i still regretted not getting to the Ambassador that night.

At last 18 Months have passed and the chance has returned to see these guys on their own stage. But wouldn't you know it, i have exams on that week and won't be able to make it! Arrrgh!

The best i can do is recommend people to go see this gig cause it is sure to kick ass!

The Kooks to play Dublin Castle:

The Kooks, who have recently parted company with their bassist (Egoeccentric has the story here), have been announced to play Dublin Castle as part of the Heineken Green Energy festival on May 5th.

The Kooks were a band that i tried to hate, their first impressions alone were nearly enough for me to write them off as part of the NME 'revolution' that, after last nights gig it is safe to say, i can't stand. Six months of continued airplay transpired and only in November after they had dominated the European Festivals circuit did i crack.

Inside in/Inside Out is a great album and is along with 'The Strokes' 'Is This It?' an album that never fails to get me in a good mood!

The Kooks new album is released April 14th.

Well all that is immaterial when they are selling some of the most unnecessarily overpriced dvd's i've ever seen!

Cliffhanger €35 and Dawn of the Dead (Remake) €43

Whilst i will always defend these films, lets be honest, they aren't Citizen Kane. Not that i have or want to watch Citizen Kane but it is something i would expect would to have fork out considerably for.

Whilst it can be argued anyone could find one or two unjustifiably expensive items in any shop, What are the odd's they 2 most expensive things, i saw that day, would be the very dvd's i craved?

There has to be more undeniable rip off's in the place! I had a voucher for €26 and could find nothing of value! In HMV great dvd's are going for only €5. How can Virgin/Zavvi justify this??

I went to amazon.co.uk the next day and got for less than Zavvi's valuation of Cliffhanger:

Gig Review: The Cribs

This would be unfair to call this a review because:
1. Me and Halley arrived late missing the first two support acts.
2. We left before the Cribs Encore.
3. Due to the below mentioned study taking priority lately i was
wrecked and in no way "Gig Worthy"which i would define as: "Excited, Energetic, Open-minded and/or Drunk."

So anyways now that i've established the bad vibes to flow along with this post, it will be no suprise that i rated the Gig, (Which is not to be confused with the Cribs performance which i rate as efficient!) as a M'eh.

This is not the Cribs fault as it seemed everyone around us and up the front had a great time. Maybe the fact that it was sponsored by NME effected the way i was to perceive the show and audience? After all i am an avid Morrissey fan and perhaps i was bitter at the way NME attempted to down their former Prized Poster Boy?

Upon entry into the Ambassador the new poster boys (and girls for that matter) that adorned every conceivable space where a poster could be put were:

The Enemy (Shite)
The Gossip (Shite, Im sorry Halley!!)
The Klaxons (I cant listen to them!)
CSS (Undeniably Great!)

The support act that were on when we arrived, 'Joe Lean and The Jing Jang Jong', were so terrible that i was almost praying for Superskin (the terrible token Irish band that supported every Metal Act to come through Dublin between 1999-2002) to launch a comeback, on the very stage, as irony would have it, i had booed them off of when they supported Machine Head in July 2002.

Arriving late i missed 'Does it Offend You, Yeah?', which judging from their myspace page seems to have been regrettable.

Anyway, as the Cribs came on, the show certainly picked up. They went through enough songs from "Mens Needs, Womens Needs, Whatever" that as a new fan i would enjoy the set and played some great unknown (to me) tracks to ensure that i will have to check out their back catalogue at a convenient time in the future.

Whilst i have never condoned leaving a gig early and really didn't have a decent reason, except that i wanted to catch Match of the Day, i didn't feel any big loss in skipping out onto a freezing O'Connell St 15 minutes early.

No not what my brother Robert was saying as regards the reformation of New Kids on the Block (see link) but Biohazard!

Yes the Brooklyn four piece are going to reform in the guise of their original line up, last together in 1994, for their 20th Anniversary. I saw these guys in 2001 at the Tattoo the Planet Festival in The Point and they definitely stole the show. This is no mean feat seeing as the line up included Slayer and i can say without hesitation this was one of the better gigs of my teenage years. Tour dates are yet to be announced but please for the love of god bring it to Europe!

What is the first thing that comes in to your mind as an impressionable youth when you see this advert on tv? Safe to say its not "I need to raise 7,000,000 Pepsi Points so i can get my hands on a Harrier Jet!"

Unfortunately the good people (sic) at Pepsi didn't count on the stupidity of the American public.

In Leonard V. Pepsi Co. The Plaintiff impressed by the advertisement set out to drink enough Pepsi to purchase a Harrier. Although he failed to do so, he discovered that the promotion rules enabled additional points to be bought for 10 cents each. The plaintiff the managed to raise $700,000 dollars, and submitted an order form claiming his harrier jet.

Unsurprisingly the defendant replied stating the ad was merely humorous, and did not constitute an offer capable of acceptance. This was ultimately accepted by the court on a motion for summary judgment, the court holding that no reasonable person could have believed that the advertisement actually offered Pepsi drinkers a fighter plane.

I always find it amazing how the internet can propel regular people into 'internet superstars' in such a short period of time. Its happened before in the case of John Smeaton, the comedically heroic Glaswegian who recalled dropkicking a flaming terrorist with such nonchalance across the worlds media.

Two days later www.johnsmeaton.com was set up and an internet superstar was born.

Well it appears to have happened again.

This 16 Year Old Threw a house party, which turned into absolute mayhem and has been estimated at causing damages of $20,000 Australian, whilst his parents were away two (yes TWO!!) days ago. He already is the subject of one of the most hit videos on youtube and break.com, he has been on radio phone in's in Melbourne and has even been interviewed by Austrailian televison. This all whilst wearing yellow glasses that'd make Timmy Mallot green with envy! Oh and sure enough he has his own website too (www.coreydelaney.com)

Fair Play to the lad, he certainly isn't taking any crap from that newsreader!

Disturbing News Story of the Day: Separated at birth twins 'married'

A pair of twins who were separated at birth got married without knowing they were brother and sister, a crossbench peer has told the House of Lords.

A court annulled the UK couple's union after they discovered their true relationship, Lord Alton said.

The peer - who was told of the case by a High Court judge involved - said the twins felt an "inevitable attraction".

He said that they were adopted by separate families, and neither was told that they had a twin sibling.

Details of their identities have been kept secret, but Lord Alton said the pair did not realise they were related until after their marriage.

The former Liberal Democrat MP raised the couple's case during a House of Lords debate on the Human Fertility and Embryology Bill in December.

"They were never told that they were twins," he told the Lords.

"They met later in life and felt an inevitable attraction, and the judge had to deal with the consequences of the marriage that they entered into and all the issues of their separation."

He told the BBC News website that their story raises the wider issue of the importance of strengthening the rights of children to know the identities of their biological parents .

"If you start trying to conceal someone's identity, sooner or later the truth will out," he said.

"And if you don't know you are biologically related to someone, you may become attracted to them and tragedies like this may occur."

Lets Just Pray to god the marriage wasn't consummated!

'Sap causes D4 residents to Sue'

This was in Mondays Irish Times.

Residents in some of Dublin's leafy suburbs are taking legal action against Dublin City Council over damage caused to their cars and properties by sap exuded by council-owned trees.

Apparently the trees are stripping paint on some of the cars and houses in the area.

This has got to be a wind up. Put things into perspective people!

First poach 2 eggs (one will not cover the bread area adequately),
Next Toast 2 Slices of White Bread (we're being healthy enough poaching the eggs!)
Add a liberal amount of butter to the toasted bread.
Place eggs on bread and 'butter' them into the toast so that the yellow is released.
Add lots of Ketchup and...

Life brings little certainty's. However...One is that despite heavy betting and romantic cliched aspirations every year by people for a 'White Christmas'. It will never happen! But here is where it gets strange. You can Guarantee that January will be the coldest windiest frostiest month known to man and more ofter than not there will be snow.

Christmas was less than 2 weeks ago, Why the insane change in weather so suddenly???

David Beckham has been training with Arsenal whilst living in London during the close season of the MLS. I have no bitterness over his departure from United, i thought he was amazing for us, but the time was right for him to leave. He's United Born an Bred, due to being raised by Fanatic United supporting Parents. He is still respected and retained dignity that some players have failed to keep after leaving Old Trafford (I'm looking at you Paul Ince and Peter Schmeichel!). He even still supports United. They are signed to the Wichita label in the States and seem to be getting sufficient promotion on its website, Bloc Party did well out of joining this label so lets hope that the same happens to this brotherly three piece from Wales!

Whilst in town though i did manage to find Die Hard on Dvd for only €5! Happy days!

Whilst Bruce Willis is the obvious reason the Die Hard Series is so well respected let us not forget the Movie Icon that is Hans Gruber played by Alan Rickman. He is responsible for one of the most repeated quotes between myself and Hunter, the timeless "Now I have a machine gun, ho ho ho..."

March was a pretty quiet month seeing as i spent it mostly in between the Library studying for the FE1's and in the Little Italian Man's finest coffee shop on Quinsboro Rd chatting with Gill! Its therefore no suprise i failed those exams!

Other highlights of the month include Ireland's Rugby Team finish the six nations by playing great rugby after getting the Inevitavble choke out of the way against France first in February.

Pretty sure there is something i'm missing though...

February saw the arrival of Anne and Ting Ting to Ireland for one of the most Crazy Weekends i'd had in a long time. Their trip took in the essential Irish Spots such as the Pub, Zaytoon and Grafton St! I joke, we took in Guinness lake and Glendalough too! Their journey even coincided with the arson attack on my Grandfathers Micra (R.I.P the Pussy Magnet!)and Alex's going away party!

I got this DVD off Robert, Cathy and Claire and must seriously recommend it to anyone who is into strange obscure comedy. It is impossible not to mention it alongside 'The Mighty Boosh' as two of the Main Characters (Matt Berry aka Dr Lucien Sanchez and Richard Ayoade aka Thornton Reed) have featured as some of my favourite Cult Hero's in 'the Boosh' (Dixon Bainsbridge and Saboo respectively)

Ghostbusters coming to an Xbox 360 near you not very soon

How amazing does this look? I'm not one to salvate over a video game release, with the exception of Pro Evo of course, however this game looks quality!

Ghostbusters was always a favourite in my house growing up and the clip below, certainly captures all that was cool about the film into the game!

Only problem is its not due out for another 10 months! sigh...

The Over Excited Countdown: Interpol

Only 13 days to go! I saw these guys at Oxegen in July having only heard "Antic's", and despite knowing only knowing a fraction of the set list i still had an amazing time! So it is with great joy that only 4 months later the NYC 4 piece should roll back to our gracious shores for a one night stop in the RDS.

In those 4 months i've brushed up "Turn on the Bright Lights" and "Our Love to Admire" so i can only imagine how much more it is going to rock!

South Park Lays Into Dorks

I'm a big fan of South Park. I was one of many people i knew who had written the show off after Family Guy became popular a few years ago. I was wrong. The last few seasons would be classified as a storming return to form if only they weren't completely funnier! During the shows peak they have ripped into many things and i have been able to say "Its funny cause its not me!" Until now....

Guitar Queer-o the latest episode of the 11th series rips into Guitar Hero playing Dorks, unfortunately since a Phantom Fm competition in May and an XBox purchase in Sept, I am one of the aforementioned Dorks.

Luckliy though its a quality episode and seeing as i'm only a "recreational gamer" and i havent devoted every ounce of my time pursuing 1,000,000 points, i can laugh!
